What is a Carom? You’ve come to the right place. Carambola is a rich source of vitamins C, B9, B6, B2 and dietary fiber. It also contains various minerals such as potassium, zinc, phosphorus and iron. This is a low-calorie fruit, it has only 31 calories per 100 grams. And the star fruit tree is also beautiful!

One mature tree can produce 200 to 400 pounds of fruit per year. The carambola is juicy with a grape texture. The room was very clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful.

It is also a very popular ornamental plant. This tree with beautiful foliage and beautiful clusters of lilac flowers can enhance the aesthetics of your garden. Flowers are also bees that can attract more pollinators to your garden.

All About Star Fruits

The star-shaped fruit plant bears the botanical name carambola averroa. However, both the tree and the fruit have many common names in different regions. For example, in Spain and its surroundings, this tree is known as a carambola. In Indonesia, it is called bilimbi, although this name also refers to averroa bilimbi and therefore is not often used to refer to carambola.

The carambola averroa is usually branched, with dark green dense foliage. It can grow up to 20-30 feet tall and 20-25 feet wide, but it is often reduced in size to facilitate harvesting.

It produces small bell-shaped flowers with five petals. Their color is purple, but there are purple stripes along the petals. When grown in tropical conditions, for example, in South Florida, the plant usually blooms in April and May, but can give a second bloom from September to October. A few rare flowers can appear all year round.

The carambola season is long, the fruit harvest can be harvested from June, sometimes until February of the following year. The fruit is approximately oval in shape, has a deep descent from the sides. When cut into cross sections, the recesses form a star on it, hence the name Carom. It is usually light yellow to dark yellow in color with a slightly darker skin.

There are many types of carom, but they fall into one of two categories: sweet or spicy. Tart varieties are usually used as fillings or in savory dishes such as curries or stews. Sweets are used to make jams and “jellies” (jellyfish, juices, cocktails or desserts.

Like other exotic fruits, it may not be for everyone. Carambola contains enough oxalic acid that its use could be potentially peril for people with kidney ailment.

Carambola grows in tropical Southeast Asia, where it has been grown for centuries. It was introduced to the subcontinent and Sri Lanka by Austronesian-speaking traders. Today it is grown and appreciated almost all over the world, with the main producers being Australia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and the United States. India is the largest producer in Southeast Asia.

Planting of star fruit trees

Planting a carambola in your garden can be very exciting. In addition, a delicious fruit is worth growing if you are in the right area! Here are some tips for proper planning.

When To Plant

The room was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. Nevertheless, it is always wise to plant this tree in early spring so that it has time to settle down before the onset of the warm months.

If you want to grow carambola seeds, you need warm soil for germination. Be sure to use a mat for heating seedlings at a temperature of at least 70 degrees to ensure good germination. You will probably still need containers with young trees that have been grown for a long time before transplanting them into the soil, possibly for up to 2-3 years.

Where To Plant

Full sun is necessary for good carambola growth. Make sure your Carom gets at least 8 hours of sunlight a day and is protected from the wind. These plants do not tolerate strong winds, cold climates or alkaline soils.

Your tree should be 20-30 feet away from any other tree or structure. This reduces the chance that the tree will get too much shade. Similarly, trees grown in containers should be at a considerable distance from other trees and structures to ensure good growth.

Carambola Care

Water and humidity

Not being a drought-resistant species, your carambola will need regular watering. Always keep the soil moist, but not too saturated. Try to carry out 1-2 deep watering per week, if there was no rain. The hotel is very conveniently located. The garden hose around the tree can be used for slow and deep watering, but you place it on a ring that is located approximately in the middle of the tree crown around the perimeter.

Your tree can tolerate the transfer conditions for 2-10 days depending on its current state of health, but will begin to suffer from a lack of oxygen around its roots. For this species, it is better to avoid overflow, but if it cannot be prevented, it will not immediately suffer.

The humid environment is ideal for this species. However, watch out for the symptoms of plant ailment that are often found in wet places.

When your tree turns 1-2 years old, emphasize that watering is important from flowering to fruiting. Make sure it has the water you need to get a lot of fruit.

Floor

Caramboles go well with a variety of soil textures. As long as the soil removes excess moisture, you can plant your tree.

Slightly acidophilic, to grow caramboles you will need a pH range from acidic to neutral. At more alkaline pH levels, they may be deficient in nutrients. Aim for a range from 4.5 to 7 for better growth.

Fertilizer

Caramboles feed moderately high. Old trees should be fertilized 4-6 times a year, and young trees should be fertilized every 30-60 days during the growing season. If possible, choose a range of fertilizers 6-2-6 gold 6-4-6, preferably a range that includes trace elements such as manganese, iron, zinc and magnesium.

If your tree is in alkaline soil, it may be deficient in nutrients. They should receive foliar sprays 4-6 times a year containing manganese, iron and zinc.
