Growing sage at home provides an endless supply of these beautiful sage leaves for spices. Small fresh leaves can be sautéed to give the dish a crispy flavor. And, most importantly, most varieties of medicinal sage, ordinary sage, can be a very pleasant addition to your garden.

All about medicinal sage

There are many species of sage, such as white sage, so widespread among tribal groups, or Sonoma sage, which produces such beautiful flowers. In fact, there are almost a thousand plants in the genus Salvia. We have a guide that also introduces you to different types of sage!

But garden sage, also called culinary sage, is considered the most popular in most gardens. Sage grows in the Mediterranean and today grows in almost all countries. Officinal sage (Salvia officinalis), one of the most popular herbs for culinary use, has many different varieties.

Much of the cultivated culinary sage has gray-green leaves. This easy-to-grow plant rarely reaches a height of more than 24 inches and takes root best in sandy or well-drained soils. But there are some Sage that have purple, dark green, golden or even variegated leaves that can be both a feast for the eyes and for the tongue!

The flowers and the leaves themselves are edible. The flowers are used as a beautiful edible garnish or to give color to a salad. The leaves are used more in cooking than fresh ones, as their herbaceous hue can give flavor to the dish. From time to time, the whole leaves are sautéed and used to decorate dishes as an additional crispy shell.

When learning how to harvest sage for the first time, you need to be careful, especially if your plant is less than a year old. Young plants need at least a year to harvest regularly, but they produce very tasty leaves that can be a real challenge. But once your plant has taken root, this easy-to-grow perennial will provide you with a rich source of fresh fragrance for years to come.

Sage planting

Sage planting is usually carried out at the beginning of the year, usually when all fears of frost have passed. If desired, the seeds can be planted indoors earlier so that the living plant can be transplanted. Otherwise, sow immediately as soon as the soil warms up to 60 degrees.

Choose a place for your sage garden where there is a lot of sunlight. Once you have chosen the location and planting methods, plant at the same depth as in the previous container. The distance between the plants should be at least 9 inches for better growth.

Culinary care of sage

If you are just starting to grow sage plants, you need to provide them with excellent growing conditions. Once they are rooted, taking care of them is much easier than you think!

Water and humidity

Although your sage plants can tolerate drought, they grow better and produce more green leaves when they are watered evenly. You can use an immersion tube at the base of the sage plant to facilitate watering. Young plants need more watering to take root.

Moisture has little effect on the health of the sage plant. The exceptions are matters when it is very hot and at the same time very humid. Most plants wither a little when it gets hot and sticky, but again, we do. No one likes to be hot and sticky!

Floor

A well-drained soil is absolutely essential for your sage plant. In gardens, sage is usually combined with other herbs, so be sure to choose companion herbs that also like well-drained soil.

This plant is designed for sandy soils, but it can also work on most other soils, provided it has additional drainage. For more sticky soil types, you can replace the soil with perlite or add sand to improve drainage.

The pH value of the soil is less important for this plant. If possible, aim for a neutral range to reach a pH of 6-7, but a slightly acidic or slightly alkaline soil should not be a problem.

Fertilization

When growing sage, fertilization seems to be a good idea, but in most matters it is simply not necessary. If you use a fairly rich soil at the beginning, everything will be fine. Among the herbs, sage plants are actually among the most resistant to the low nutritional value.

However, the annual application of compost can help keep your sage extremely happy. In addition, the decomposition of leaf mulch ensures green leaves and a good future harvest.
